Helpful Hints for English
There are many great ways to make learning fun with your child. Here are some ideas to stimulate their love of English.
- place labels all over the house -great for young readers. Set a challenge for your child eg find six objects beginning with t, find two objects with rhyming names, find two objects whose names start with bl-.
- have your child help to write the shopping list or a "to do" list when heading to the shops.
- encourage them to write letters to a friend/relative from whom they will receive a response. There is nothing like receiving a letter in the mail!
- encourage them to write thank you letters for playing at a friend's house, staying the night, for being invited to a birthday party or for gifts they have received.
- baking is great fun and has a YUMMY result! Read instructions together when baking.
- scrapbooking - make your own books using magazine clippings or photos from adventures you have had as a family/group, about their pet, friends, school trips. Get them to "journal" what the pictures are about. These books will not only be treasured memories but will also be fun to read to others.
- let them answer the phone and learn to take messages.
Helpful Hints for Maths
Maths can be so much fun ...check out some of these ideas:
- building & construction can be great fun. This provides opportunities for planning, measuring and creating shapes/objects.
- learning colours - sorting washing into colours.
- growing plants - is a great opportunity to learn about the seasons/months to plant different plants, measuring the plants as they grow.
- even laying the table can be exciting - get them to work out how many knifes, forks, spoons, placemats they would need for a number of people.
- cooking - measuring ingredients for baking can be fun.
- treasure hunts - are an opportunity to practise not only their reading but also their sense of direction. It can be fun to not only follow a treasure hunt but have the opportunity to create your own.
- make your own board games or play conventional ones together.
St Ives Staff
Owners: John and Tinara Eagles
Hi I'm Tinara, the Owner and Manager of NumberWork'nWords St Ives.
I have been with NumberWorks'nWords now for 14 years. Starting in 1997 as a tutor, whilst completing my degree, then as Assistant Manager, then Manager which finally led to me purchasing the St Ives business in 2004.
I really enjoy the challenge of tutoring children and find it an extremely satisfying job. There is nothing better than seeing children grow in confidence and start to not just like, but love learning!
I have been married to my husband John (pictured) for 8 years. My spare time is taken up playing netball, doing handy work around the house and catching up with friends and family. I am also a member of North Rocks Anglican church.
Manager: Glen Spencer
Hi, my name is Glen Spencer, and I am the manager of NumberWorks’nWords St Ives. I have always enjoyed helping young people achieve their full potential and teaching them that learning can actually be a fun experience! I’ve had the opportunity to teach in various primary and secondary schools around Sydney, including Newington College, Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt and Lidcombe Public School. For three years, I also worked as a teacher supervisor and English teacher in Nagoya, Japan.
This is a photo of me with my wife, Denin and my son, Christopher, celebrating his second birthday. When I’m not at NumberWorks’nWords or gallivanting about with my wonderful family, you can usually find me either reading a book, painting a canvas, or eating something scrumptious that my wife made.
