BIG VOCABULARY = BETTER STORIES
Lots of parents ask what they can do to help with their child's English development, particularly their story writing. In my mind it is very simple. If your child writes simple, uninteresting sentences with limited use of adjectives, verbs and adverbs, it is more than likely they have a very small vocabulary or are disinterested. "If you want to build a fabulous house, you need stuff to do it with." Therefore if you want to write a wonderful, interesting story you need words... and lots of 'em.
Children develop vocabulary by hearing it, using it in their own speech and then in their writing. If we use interesting language with our children, they are more likely to begin to use it themselves. How easy is it for a two year old to use swear words - they have heard it somewhere and realised that it is 'interesting' or gets a reaction, so therefore they want to use it too!
Having discussions about 'fun' words can stimulate children's interest and help them to build up a bank of words they can then use when they write.
Showing children how to use a dictionary and thesaurus is also an excellent idea. This can be done with the computer tools as well as in the paper versions if they think it is old fashioned to use the books. It is always fascinating to find synonyms and use them in writing or even in discussions.
Try it and see what happens.

Pennant Hills Staff
Owner: Peter Eakin
Hi, I'm Peter the manager and owner here at Pennant Hills.
My wife Samantha and I have 2 young boys - one now in Kindy, the other in Year 3. We're all trying to be active, either at home mowing the lawn!, on our bikes or at the beach or playing soccer (sorry - football!).
I loved teaching in Sydney's North and am enjoying my return to teaching within the NumberWorks'nWords atmosphere of fun and confidence building!
I'm always so impressed by the progress of our NW'nW students through the year and the way they're learning! I truly believe it's a great system and it's great fun! That's both our maths and English programs.
Please call or pop into the Centre to meet and chat with me and we can discuss how to boost your child's/children's confidence in both Maths and English.
