Term 3 International Writing Competition
This term we are running an International Creative Writing Competition. This is a chance for students to write a short story about any topic. It can be fun, sad or scary - it's up to you!
All entries must be in by Friday the 13th of August and winning entries from each category will be entered into the NumberWorks'nWords International Competition. The winning entries will be available online and everyone will be able to vote for their favourite piece of writing. Great prizes are up for grabs including an Ipad, Ipod, Digital Camera, Movie Tickets and much more!
Free Introductory Lesson
Like anything, you have to know what you are in for before you commit to it.
Students who at first are apprehensive about receiving help for their Maths/English are often surprised at how much fun learning can be. We pride ourselves on creating a fun, positive and nurturing atmosphere in our centre.
You are invited to come along and see for yourself what we have to offer. After our free evaluation in English and/or Maths we will discuss your child's strengths and weaknesses, and how we can tailor our programme to work best for your child.
If your child is lacking confidence, the solution may well be the fun and vibrant atmosphere of NumberWorks'nWords!
Tips for Term Three
Meet with your child’s teacher as soon as possible and make sure you discuss any concerns you have from the previous term. Time and time again I meet parents who hold off, waiting to see how things go. All of a sudden it’s Term 3 and their child has fallen into a really bad pattern. They then have to play catch-up, and you’re more than half way through the year before things are being properly addressed. It is also a great opportunity to talk about the topics they will be covering and any aspects that we could support here at NumberWorks'nWords.
I must also add here that if you are considering tuition at NumberWorks'nWords the same applies. It is much better to get your child support now to build confidence & regroup before the year is completely lost.
More tips:
- Letting the teacher know that you appreciate feedback on your child's progress-both positive and negative.
- Research shows that children who are read to in their early years do better in school. Make reading a habit in your home, for both you and your child. This also applies to the essential maths skills, like counting, basic facts and tables.
- Be encouraging and praise your child for the amount of effort that he or she puts into a project.
- Be prepared to meet with your child's teacher if you are concerned, or don't feel like you receive feedback from your son/daughter. Remember, teachers are professionals & when a meeting is organised will have the answers to your questions. Try NOT to 'spring' a meeting on your child's teacher. Organise it through the school diary & give them time to prepare. At the start of the teaching day there is usually a great deal of prep to do, so an unscheduled 'pounce' by a parent is not usually productive!
- Schools + Communities = Success. Look for specific ways that you can support your child's school. Volunteer a few hours a week in the classroom. Offer to speak to your child's class (or others) about a special hobby or area of expertise. Encourage a local business to adopt your child's school.
I must also add here that if you are considering tuition at NumberWorks'nWords the same applies. It is much better to get your child support now to build confidence & regroup before the year is completely lost.

Ashgrove Staff
Manager: Liz Wullems
Hi, I'm Liz. I am a teacher with a Masters of Education majoring in English as a Second Language.
I was a senior maths tutor for Numberworks’nWords whilst studying to become a teacher. I believed in the program so much that I am now lucky enough to be the manager of our centre in Ashgrove.
When not teaching, I love to write songs, play the guitar in a band, develop websites, write creatively and keep fit with as many outdoor activities as I can!
I am looking forward to meeting and welcoming you to a wonderful centre that will support your child to achieve great success in life.
Owner: Wade Pell
Hi, I'm Wade. After graduating with a couple of degrees from QUT I moved south and spent six years enjoying the culture, getting married, working and studying yet another degree in Melbourne.
In 2004, my wife Claire and I returned to the sunshine of Brisbane to bring the fun back into learning for the kids around where we grew up in Chermside. We found the thrill and rewards so great at Chermside, that we opened another centre in Ashgrove in 2008 and took on the State Manager role for Queensland in 2010. In short, it is a job I am very passionate about and I just love to get out of bed each day to get into it!
We look forward to meeting with you and helping your children to enjoy learning the critical subjects of Maths and English.
